Solar Small Business Case Study

Our Client Business is a small Brisbane based company with average quarterly electricity consumption of $2400. The company is on a Standard tariff of $0.25/kWh. Sunrays Power’s design team analysed Business’s daily consumption through interval data supplied by Business’s electricity retailer. The Business operation hours are from 7.00AM to 5.00PM.

The Sunrays Power design team engineered a system by analysing interval data and using state-of-the-art design software which created a suitably-sized commercial solar system for the business’s energy pattern. The team engineered the system considering business operating hours, business usage pattern, business load profile and future energy expansion. Sunrays Power’s CEC-accredited designer team also considered weekend baseload and the limited business operating hours during the weekend.

Sunrays Power Design Team concluded the client will need a 25kW solar system which will optimally fit their load profile. Sunrays Power suggested a slightly larger 30kw system, so the client can take benefit of the solar system without having extra complexity on the solar system. Solar System larger than 30kW needs Network Protection system which adds extra cost to the system. The team suggested to oversize the 30kW inverter with 34kw PV panels so the system can produce extra power in low light conditions and in winter months. The oversizing of the system was also necessary due to some panels facing east, which was an inevitable location for the roof orientation.

Sunrays Power set up the solar monitoring portal for the client, so the client can fully monitor the system and they can forecast their future electricity bills for budgeting. Sunrays Power presented client two choices for financing, either a Chattel Mortgage on the solar system, or go with the Rental option to get better tax benefits. The client decided to use their own financer.

Client was fully aware the system return on investment will be slightly higher and fairly accurate, due to a detailed design offered by Sunrays Power. The client was relieved from the major stress of non-compliant installation and workmanship due to Sunrays Power’s reputation. Sunrays Power proposed a system which will offset their 55% electricity bill considering the early morning and later afternoon usage as well as base load of running refrigeration on solar. This exercise proved quite efficient for the client.

One year post installation, the client realised their total return on investment was better than what was presented with the consideration of contingencies. The client was surprised to understand that the business case originally presented, was 85% accurate when compared with contingencies and other factors.

Feed In-Tariff for Commercial Solar

Generally, feed-in tariff schemes are set annually and are subject to change based on wholesale electricity prices.

A high wholesale electricity price will result in a higher feed-in tariff, while a low wholesale electricity price will result in a lower feed-in tariff.

When a business installs solar power, it is likely to have some excess power that can be exported back to the grid.
