Should You Install a Solar EV Charger for Your Home?

An Electric Vehicle Charger is an important aspect of EV ownership. An EV Charger allows you to top up your electric vehicle in a fast, safe, and convenient manner.

For most electric vehicle owners, having an at-home charger hardwired into their home by a licensed electrician is the best solution for installing an EV charger. Compared to the standard plug-in EV charger that comes with your car, this charger offers significantly faster-charging speeds while incorporating several safety features, such as DC fault protection, temperature management, and solar panel integration, making it the best method for charging electric cars at home.

Other Installers Won’t Tell You This

The process of charging an EV is similar to that of charging a mobile phone. Just plug your car into the nearest power point, like any home appliance, and you should be set.

However, one thing they won’t tell you is that a regular power point will provide a much slower charge than a dedicated EV Charger.

In the case of a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range, a fully depleted 60- kWh battery will take 30 Hours to fully charge from a regular power point.

This will then be based on your electricity provider’s costs per kWh.

While the costs associated may still be lower than current petrol prices, ‘plug-in’ home charging may not be as convenient for those that are always on the move. The public superchargers can charge your EV faster. However, superchargers should not be used frequently, since their extremely fast charging speeds will shorten your EV battery’s life. Additionally charging frequently through public superchargers is expensive, and time consuming.

Prolong your EV’s battery life and save money with Sunrays Power on your side.

Charging your electric vehicle with quality EV chargers is easy with Sunrays Power.

Bringing the latest EV charging technology to your home is Sunrays Power’s goal.

We partner with the world’s leading EV charging brands, and have a network of certified electricians across Brisbane who are experts in installing solar EV chargers.

If you’ve recently purchased a new electric car or plan to in the near future, contact Sunrays Power today to find out how we can help you charge your EV using solar power. Our EV chargers work in conjunction with your solar PV system and are optimised to extend your EV’s battery life while also providing faster charging times.

100% Solar Powered EVs

Charging your EV with a wall charger does not guarantee it will be charged using renewable energy.

A smart solar EV charger will ensure that you only use solar to charge your EV. Smart EV chargers detect excess solar energy from your solar PV system and divert it to your car rather than export it to the grid.

Manage your energy usage and make changes to save money. In addition to designing and installing an advanced solar PV and smart solar charger system, Sunrays Power will assist you with managing your EV charging and home energy systems.

Five Benefits of Installing a Residential Solar EV Charger

Option to charge your car only from excess solar generation

With a solar EV charger, charging your EV is cheaper and less polluting over the long run.

Protect battery degradation by avoiding DC fast charging.

An EV wall charger prolongs the battery life by providing consistent charging, and avoiding the increased temperatures.

Safer compared to your default plug-in Chargers.

EV wall chargers have several safety features, such as DC fault protection, temperature management, making it the best method for charging electric cars at home.

Great savings in charging costs compared to Super Chargers

It is more expensive to use public fast-charging EV stations than to use your home grid power, and is more environmentally harmful.

Ability to charge fast at home (compared to default plug-in Chargers).

A default plug-in charger will take up to 36 hours to fully charge. By installing a dedicated EV charger, you can charge your car faster and plan for longer trips.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We get many questions from our residential customers. Here are some of those questions.

The total cost of your solar PV system is affected by many factors.

Generally, most people will have their upfront costs influenced by:

  • The Government/state incentive obtained.
  • Cash vs Finance options.
  • Installation costs – including labour costs.
  • The solar panel brand, type and number of panels installed.
  • Inverter brand, type, size and number of inverters installed.
  • The Racking and Frame system and their components.
  • Roof height, pitch and the material of the roof.
  • After Sales arrangements – such as yearly maintenance agreements or monitoring.

However, there might be some extra expenses depending on your situation, such as:

  • Meter upgrade or reconfigurations.
  • Switchboard upgrades.
  • Cabling upgrades.
  • Site preparation costs – such as roof or floor restructuring
  • Shade removal – such as trees.
  • Grid application fee (subjected to system size, mostly effects larger commercial systems)

This is a difficult question that we get asked a lot. The truth of the matter is… it depends.

There are many factors which could affect how much you pay on your power bill once going solar.

Some factors could be:

– Your consumption patterns and behaviours regarding energy consumption.

Depending on the number of appliances you own, your appliance’s energy needs, when you use electricity, your behaviours regarding energy use – will ultimately determine how much you will save.

Without knowing these details and actively changing your behaviours, most households will never save as much as they could be saving.

– Feed-In Tariff

A Feed-In tariff is an amount your electricity retailer will pay you for exporting your green energy into the grid.

Households who are approved for export will be the ones who save the most on their electricity bills, as well as gain the most benefit from having solar panels installed.

It is important to note that some households might not be able to receive a feed-in tariff as there are various requirements or reasons that prohibit a full export of power.

– Where you live

Where you live will affect how much electricity you could be generating.

For example, if you live in Tasmania, your sunlight hours differ when compared to someone living in North Queensland.

Because of these differences between sunlight, received, some people will naturally produce more electricity for longer. Minimising your chances of dipping back into the grid for power.

Some other location factors could affect how much you save, such as shading. This could be from trees, or how much dust you receive. If you live next to a busy road, construction site or train tracks, the constant movement could blow dust onto your solar panels, affecting their performance.

– Size of your system

The size of your solar PV system will dictate how much electricity you will generate.

Therefore, it is essential to install a system large enough to cover your needs and electricity bill.

If you want to maximise your gains, consider oversizing your panels for added electricity generation.

The ‘best’ Solar Panels are efficient, having a broad temperature range, and a long warranty.

There are countless blogs, survey results and opinion pieces that list different brands online. With each promoting a new brand and panel model every year. We try to take away the confusion behind your decision-making process by only selling Clean Energy Council approved products. So, you can rest assured that each brand and model we sell is compliant to Australian standards.

Inverters are the most sophisticated component of your solar PV system. It is also the component that is most likely to break first. Because of this, you want your inverter to have a low failure rate, a long warranty and a well-established presence in Australia.

Just like the panels we sell; we only sell Clean Energy Council approved inverters. It is important to remember that you can get a good inverter despite your price range by making sure that the inverter you purchase is CEC approved.

To secure your system, make sure to choose an inverter brand that has a strong presence in the area that you live in. This is important, as it decreases the shipment time of a new replacement inverter to a few days, rather than having to wait for a month.

Grid connection is one of the most critical steps in your solar journey.

To connect to the grid, you need to ask permission from your electricity distributor. This is because the generated Solar energy’s impacts on the performance of the electricity grid.
A ‘Network Connection Agreement’ must be lodged to your distributor prior to installation.

This form is lodged by us on your behalf to your electricity distributor. This form will also dictate if you will be able to export your unused solar power to receive a Feed-In-Tariff.

If you’re not sure who your distributor is, you can check by looking at your power bill or by calling your retailer.

It’s well known that the solar industry is competitive. With many of the bigger players willing to undercut the competition.

We could do that, or, we could be better and offer quality installations, parts and service.

To uphold this point-of-difference, we will not compromise price with quality. We will not sell you the cheapest systems because we will not cut corners by installing the most inexpensive parts and brands.

Additionally, price matching or price beating is difficult in the solar industry because no installation is the same.

For example, price matching or even price beating the same brand of a pen is easy, as they are functionally the same, are made by the same company and no matter who you buy this pen from, the quality is identical.

This can’t be said for solar PV system installations because there is value added all throughout the installation process, as well as extra services, added post-installation.
There are also added costs which could crop up depending on your property (such as switchboard upgrades, rewiring cots and shading removal).

A Solar System is an Investment.

We want to do better and protect your investment by providing only the best. We do our research and make sure that the individual parts our installers use to install the system are the best we can get. We don’t price beat, because for us to price beat, we would have to remove the services that would normally come with our installations, or, supply products that don’t meet our quality standards.

We won’t compromise on our point of difference by cutting corners. We want to do what is best – not what is cheapest.

If you believe your system is not working, here are some things you can do to find out:

  • Check your inverter – What lights are flashing? What is your output? Try to check it the next day to make sure there is no solar generation.
  • Check the solar circuit breaker – Has it tripped? If it has wait until nightfall and to turn it back on. If it trips the next day, then please call us, as this could indicate a potential serious fault.
  • Shut your solar pv system down and then restart it.
  • If you have a problem that can’t be fixed by doing the above suggestions, please call us and we can come out to check the system (there can be a call out fee if your fault is not based on a warranty claim).
  • Find your original paperwork as you might wish to make a warranty claim.

For every installation we do, we also hand out a solar user manual which includes instructions on how to check the performance of your system, as well as instructions in what to do when there is a system failure. If you have lost your solar user manual or would like a digital version, please send us an email and we can send through a digital version of your solar user manual.

Additionally, if you are one of our clients, feel free to call our helpful troubleshooting team on 1800 720 719 and we will help you fix any issues which may appear.

It depends.

If your number one reason to install solar panels is to save yourself the grief of ever experiencing another blackout, then we want to be frank and tell you, that is a common misconception within the solar industry.

Having solar will not automatically save you from blackouts, as it is a matter of public safety. If you want to use power during a blackout, then you will need to install extra system fail-safes.

To understand why this is needed, we need to get technical.

The flow of power coming from your solar panels changes regularly, according to the amount of sunlight reaching the panels. Inverters convert the DC power from the solar panels into AC power which matches the frequency and voltage of the grid in order to synchronise the phases of the feed into the grid.

Of course, your demand for power changes regularly, as appliances are switched on or off. As the grid can provide much more power than your solar system, it is also the back-up power source which allows the flow of power into a property to be stabilised. Together with the grid, your solar system can create a stable flow of power to meet your needs.
Without grid connection (or other specific fail-safes), your solar panel’s electricity production will not be stable, causing harm to you and your appliances.

When a blackout occurs, and the grid can’t stabilise that power, then the same thing would happen if you were not connected to the grid. The supply of power from the solar system into your premises would vary, damaging or causing harm to your equipment, appliances, and even yourself. In order to stop that from happening, the inverter has a failsafe called anti-islanding.

Anti-islanding is an electrical protection measure that is inside anything that generates energy. Anti-islanding protects us, our properties, and maintenance workers from injury by stopping the production of electricity as well as disconnecting the solar unit from the grid.

Without this protection, the solar system will continue to generate electricity – becoming an island, surrounded by a sea of unpowered powerlines, allowing your generated power to travel freely along the gridlines.

Anti-islanding is a safety precaution to protect you, your neighbours, and the utility employees from any live wires that may be touched.

If you want to use your solar energy during a blackout, speak to our solar energy designers on 1800 720 719 or send us an email on info@sunrayspower.com.au to explore the various options available for your energy goals.

This depends on the system’s components.

Most of our solar panels come with a an extended 25 years performance warranty and depending on the product you buy; our panels may have 10 years or 25 years manufacturing warranty. Sunrays Power have further agreements and licenses to provide additional extended warranties for any REC Panel, or Q Cell Panel system which we install.

For our inverters, we are able to provide a minimum of 5 years warranty on select inverter brands. Additionally, if installed through us, you may be able to register your inverter online (select inverters only) and receive an additional 5 years Parts and Labour warranty on your inverter.

As part of our solar commitments under the Clean Energy Council, we also provide our clients an additional 5 years workmanship warranty on the whole life of the system.

Want to know the warranties for a specific inverter brand, solar panel brand, or battery system, email our sales team on info@sunrayspower.com.au, and we will send through all relevant details to you within the next two business days.

Not necessarily!

Most insurance companies now consider your solar PV system part of your home, and therefore your solar system will be covered under your current home and contents insurance policy.

However, for added protection, you will need to:

  • Confirm with your insurance provider that your solar system is covered by your current plan, or can be covered in writing.
  • Update your home and contents insurance to include your solar system once you have installed the solar system.

If anyone looking to get Solar PV systems installed at there property, I would recommend to contact Ronak from Sunray’s Power. I contacted Sunray’s Power to find out the best option for Solar Installation, where I spoke to Ronak and the level of service offered by him from my initial call of getting the quote upto getting Installed was an excellent experience. He completed the required assessment remotely and offered me couple of quotes based on my needs and left it for me to make a decision to pick one. We did had few phone calls on the quotes offered and finally I ended up selecting ‘330W Q Cells Q Peak Duo G5+ Panels with a Fronius Inverter’ based on my budget. Post selecting the Panels and Inverter he also booked in an installer, who was professional and did an excellent job in installing the Panel and Inverters at my property and also walk me through the functions of the Inverter. Being new in using the system, Ronak also assisted me how to connect the Inverter to the home Internet and monitor the performance of the system via the app on the phone. He also addressed any questions I had from my initial phone call up to monitoring the performance of the system on my Phone post installation. Overall experience was excellent and I would recommend Ronak and his team for this work.

After receiving a quote created from aerial photos, an installation supervisor visited the property to do a physical evaluation. That evaluation identified some issues with the initial quoted system. A couple of alternatives were presented which would have cost more, but the initial quoted price was honoured so we ended up with a better system for the same price. The installation went without a hitch including the removal and disposal of the existing solar panels. The system has been running for over 3 months and the power generated has been good and better than expected on those not so sunny days. We are very happy to recommend Sunrays Power for their professionalism and quality of the product selected for us.

Sunrays power installed my solar late in 2019, was a small discrepancie on how many panels as my roof had an unusual section and they couldn't mont on it so i ended up with 5.something kw instead of the 6kw. System was jinko panels with a Fronious 5kw inverter with wireless login function and tracking. System has been faultless and performed great, was making excess money for me at 1 stage but with the pay in credit cutback not so much now, i can export over 600kw a quarter and only use 100kw grid, solar will run the house from about 10am to 3pm winterish and from 7am to around 8pm in summer before grid power takes over so that in itself is a great saving, in summer it will run my aircon on medium with no grid usage. Highly recommend Sunrays power... Sorry, no photos of the system.... yet..

Its been 3 years since our Solar panel was professionally installed by the people at Sunrays Power and I would highly recommend them to anyone. In fact I did after it was installed to 3 households near me. Not only was the knowledge of the sales person extraordinary about our installation, but the installers, 2 guys did such a good job installing that when the inspectors came they mentioned that we were the first house to be approved by the regulators without any changes in over a 100 other installers. How good is that. It was installed in no time at all in less than a day and we have been seeing the benefits ever since. Our electricity bill has been reduced by 2/3 and we are high users. If you haven't installed a solar panel yet, why not ask Sunrays Power for a quote. Why, because you deserve a good installer in Solar panels. Thank you Sunrays Power. Regards Ronald
